Federal Reserve Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority lowered interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second reduction in the current year during economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually studies BLS data to assess labor market conditions, such as the count of employment gains added to the market and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in August.

The figure of jobs created to the economy in August was down by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Decline

Though BLS was set to release last month’s job market report in early October, it halted its publication once the closure started. Private payroll firm ADP reported earlier this month that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, which he had previously said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still issued its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Costs rose 3% over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
